Product Design

A dermatologist, tired of watching patients walk in overexposed, partnered with a physical product design firm to build a wearable — worn on the wrist or clipped to a bag — that could track UV exposure in real time. We were brought on to design the companion app that would make that data mean something.

There was no existing playbook. We built the underlying exposure metric ourselves, pulling from public data and scientific journals, then designed around two real constraints: the UI needed to communicate several live variables at once — current exposure, current UV rate, exposure accumulated through the day, and what to do about it — and the metric itself needed to behave intelligently, slowing its rate when someone took a real action like putting on a hat or applying sunscreen, rather than just climbing. An onboarding flow captured skin type up front so exposure tracking stayed accurate per person.

I led product and UI design, working alongside a product strategist focused on market positioning and an engineer building the underlying system. I partnered directly with the engineer on the logic itself — how exposure-slowing actions should affect the rate, and the reminder system prompting sunscreen reapplication.

The app shipped on the first wearable devices and was featured in Forbes. The product has since evolved into an Apple wearable ecosystem, still helping people stay safe in the sun today.
